7 UK Tour: ANEW
Maryen Cairns - "a minstrel, an entertainer who brings madcap joy and whimsy and the proper touch of artistic madness" - John Derr, 2023
The ANEW Tour is a celebration of Maryen’s 7th album, ANEW, and the new vision the writing process brought her: “It was like a switch clicked inside my head and suddenly I was creating music from a new perspective, writing sidewards, out of the corner of my eye”
Indie folk singer/songwriter Maryen Cairns is playing SOLO, telling stories of smugglers, strong women and of hope for the future, all through authentic stripped back arrangements utilising percussion (sits on a cajon with pedals playing a medicine drum & shakers), acoustic guitar & piano. Songs from all 7 albums are featured, some very differently from the originals.
This is the first time Scottish born Australian Maryen has played live in the UK since she lived in London during the 90’s, when she was invited to support FISH (ex Marillion) at Hammersmith Apollo and on a UK tour, following on from contributing backing vocals to his Internal Exile album.
Back in Australia, along with becoming mother to 4 children, Cairns embraced home studio recording. Now in 2023, based in Guernsey in the Channel Islands, she records at home and sends the songs through cyberspace to her mentor, legendary Rolling Stones producer Chris Kimsey in London, where the tracks may be augmented by other musicians before being mixed.
Maryen moved to the island of Guernsey not long before covid hit, and took the opportunity of covid induced time-out to connect with new listeners through live-streaming. Hence her club ”The Cairns Club” was born, where she live-streams “Cairns Club Chaos”. The club has led to real communication around Maryen’s music and directly to these shows in the UK.
